Monroe would not allow Trump anywhere near him. Bluegrass is full of faith based folks. It’s full of gospel music. Thing is, it’s honest. Trump is not. He would be outraged at the huge security guard keeping he and his ilk away from the genuine love of Bluegrass. John Hartford would write a song about him. It would be funny as hell and trump would hate it . Know why. Because he’s hateful. Bless his heart.

Saw JH at a rock festival in, Glen Rock, Pennsylvania in maybe 1976.

So Cal in the 70's, a friend invited me to go along to a free concert at Cal State Fullerton, on the grass, with the grass and a bottle of wine, I was intorduced to this man and his music. My taste at the time went from Lead Zeplin, Hendrix, and because of Dylan, Johnny Cash....the first time, he was solo and i was blown away by the way he pounded out the bass with his feet while singing, playing banjo, guitar, fiddle and harp....a true troubadour of our time....he is in a catgory with Ramblin Jack Elliot, Townes Van Zandt and Fred Neil....RIP John

Good God, Phish is horrible. I love this song and thought I'd give it a shot, but nope. Still don't like Phish.

I used to watch this show when it was on back in 1970 in Australia. As a 14-year old, I was mesmerised by seeing artists I'd only ever heard of, or never heard of at all and I didn't care that it was mimed (pretty much everything was then). Interestingly, John Hartford later became the host of the show.

He was the best. Thanks for posting this.

i got to hang with jeff at the mont bleu in tahoe after a show. we played the sigma derby horse racing game till the sun came up......such a nice guy and super humble. R.I.P. legend!

As a towboater and huge fan of John Hartford the original version is way better than The Turnpike Trubibors! This is some good old river music! This song runs through my head all the time when building tow!

RIP Jeff. You made a mountain sound that others truly wished they could create. But alas, nobody could but you. I'm in my fourth year clean and sober... coming from the same BS I lived in as Jeff did. Somehow, I stopped fighting and pray often. I am now a performer in a symphony, a violin teacher, I still fiddle my ass off anytime I want to and am now dual majoring in Music and Psychology. I am now playing the best I ever had. God Bless. I pray my experience can be the evidence someone else sees at the exact moment they decide to stop fighting everything and anything and drop the fear of being the best you can be.

Sounds like he has his Banjo tuned down a Minor Third to Pete Seeger's Open E Tuning so he could sing in a Lower Key. I could use a Long Neck Banjo and play the same music as him.
